MTNL is a government-owned telecommunications corporation that operates in the Delhi and Mumbai metropolitan areas. The Government of India founded MTNL on April 1, 1986, to improve the quality of telecom services, extend the telecom network, add new services, and collect revenue to support India’s main metro cities of Delhi and Mumbai’s telecom growth needs.
Over the course of its more than two decades of service, the company has seen overall development and expansion, as well as increased operating performance. MTNL now offers a variety of telecom networks, including GSM (including 3G services), fixed telephone service and CDMA-based mobile service, ISDN, Broadband, Internet and Leased Line services. Since its inception, MTNL has been at the forefront of delivering state-of-the-art technology-based telecommunications services to its customers at the most competitive cost. MTNL was the first in the world to introduce some of the most cutting-edge telecom innovations, including ADSL2+ and VDSL2 in broadband, IPTV on MPEG4 infrastructure, 3G mobile service and VOIP.
Via its Joint Ventures and Subsidiaries, MTNL provides telecommunications services outside national borders. United Telecom Limited (UTL), MTNL joint venture in Nepal, and Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited 100 percent subsidiary in Mauritius (MTML).
