What is Border Security Force?

The primary function of the Border Security Force (BSF) is to guard our borders. This includes protecting people living in border areas, preventing trans-border crimes, maintaining law and order along India’s land and maritime boundaries, providing a supportive counter-insurgency role, guarding vulnerable points etc.

It was raised on 1 December, 1965, following the Sino-Indian war of 1962. The prime objective was to guard India’s sensitive borders from both external and internal threats. At present it is India’s largest border guarding force numbering around 2 million men and women with a yearly budget of more than $2 billion.

The BSF is also involved in nation building activities such as road and bridge construction, flood relief and aid distribution etc.

What does the BSF have?

The BSF has a variety of state-of-the-art equipment and machinery to keep our borders safe from any threat. In fact, they are one of the best-equipped border guarding unit in the world. Some of their assets include portable solar power generating units, night vision gadgets and devices that enable them to detect illegal intrusions or cross-border movements, hi-tech radars that can ‘see’ through fog or smoke, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to better monitor the borders, boats and bullet proof vehicles for quick transportation.

What do they do?

Establishing an impregnable border is a continuous process which cannot be done using conventional manpower or resources. The BSF has therefore introduced a number of modern technologies to monitor critical/sensitive areas. These include border outposts (BOP), observation towers, surveillance sensors and devices that provide the BSF real time information about intruders or possible cross-border disturbances.

BSF personnel also assist in international peacekeeping activities such as those in Haiti, Congo, Ethiopia, Liberia etc. They have also taken part in many rescue operations including the ones carried out after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami as well as the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

They are often called upon to provide aid during natural disasters such as floods, cyclones etc. and help in distributing food items and medicines to those stranded due to border disputes.
